Thaw

The gray times
are the hardest.
The emptiness somehow worse
than pain would be.
as if your heart has forgotten
how to be alive.
Winter, too,
is cold and grey,
and the callous silence
of frozen ground,
the promise of spring
locked just out of our reach.

But waiting
is not the same as death,
no matter how eternal it seems.

The ground will thaw,
the sun will warm,
and the emptiness inside you
will bloom
again.
