Never Tell Me the Odds

Never let the medical profession convince you to kill yourself.

Because oh, they will try. They'll tell you numbers as if 10, 20 and 30 are the same thing as zero, as if any chance really means no chance because of logic. They'll explain all the ways why your body is such a faulty piece of equipment that it makes no sense to keep it going. They will push you along one long, complicated word at a time, doing their best to talk you into laying down in your own grave so they can put the dirt on you. It's not logical to keep trying to live. The science is against you.

If you're the one who's tired, I get it. The fight is hard, especially if your medical professionals are actively working against you. In the end, it's your call.

But I have personally met people who were told they had six months to live 17 years ago. People who have rich, full, wonderful lives with bodies that doctors didn't think were worth wasting their time on. I am one of those people.

An incredible number of things have happened in this world on worse odds than the doctors are giving you. And those doctors? They don't really know you. They don't know the future. They just know what's happened before, and none of them are gamblers. They don't care enough about you to bet their time.

Make them. You've already put all your money in the pot, you might as well play the game all the way to the end. There's no way of knowing what the next hand is unless you ask them to deal you the cards.
